The old days were pretty good

I grew up in the old days. My dad was in the Navy so was rarely home on weekends. When I did something wrong, my mom spanked me with a belt. On my first day as school, we were out in the playground waiting on school to start. My older brother said I could not beat up another kid. I proved him wrong. First class had barely begun and a lady came to our classroom. I was taken to the principal’s office. He got out his wood paddle and gave me a serious spanking. That didn’t happen again until seventh grade. That was the last one for me.

I was very active in sports. When the season was over, the first place team got trophies. Sometimes the runner up got a trophy. All went home with a smile on their face. They were proud that they tried.

In high school, there were numerous pickups with gun racks on the back window with loaded guns on the rack. In each classroom, there was an American flag and each day started with Pledge of Allegiance. Over the intercom a prayer was heard. This was done at every grade every school day.

When I was raising my kids, I spanked them with a belt when they did something wrong. I didn’t have to do it with the younger kids. When the younger ones were straying, the older ones would tell them that they don’t want to go to ‘spank-city.’ They behaved afterwards. I feel very fortunate to see them as adults. They are among the most honest and loving people you will ever meet.

Today, punishment is ‘time-out.’ There is no Pledge of Allegiance or prayer in school. Everyone gets a participation trophy. Young people never experience failure or punishment.  They say there is nothing wrong with doing drugs, to never get exposed to something you disagree with and for us to hate those with different points of view.

I do not recall a single school shooting. People have changed. The old days were pretty good for all.
